Prawnaholic
The New Generation of Our Classic Hae Mee! Prawnaholic sells hae mee with a modern twist.
According to google, an ‘-aholic’ denotes someone who is addicted to something.
I’ve heard of shopaholic, workaholic and even sleepaholic. But, prawnaholic? That’s a first for me.
Chef-owner, Mr Alan Choong, started his job in the food and beverage industry five years ago, working in different hotels and restaurants before carving out his career as a hawker.
He shared that during his tenure as an apprentice, he would visit different hawker centres to source for inspiration.
One of his favourite dishes to order would be, you guessed it, prawn noodles. Now that he has his own shop, he has decided to pay homage to the local delight by creating a modern version of the hawker classic.
When asked if he preferred working as a hotel line cook or a hawker, the 24-year-old shared that the job as a hawker is definitely tougher,
but the sense of satisfaction he gets is worth it. He enjoys the daily interaction with other stall owners and customers and getting to know them better.
At the time of writing, there are only six dishes on the menu.
Two dishes are sides while the other four are different variations of hae mee.
We had the latter, which was very ordinary, and not really worth the money in our opinion.
It is always heartwarming to see the younger generations starting out as hawkers.
Even though it is hard work, at the end of the day, their passion for hawker food still triumphs.
Prawnaholic does serve up a decent modern rendition of hae mee.

Truly a traditional prawn noodles place. Lots of choices to add to the prawn noodles such as pig skin, intestines, pork rib and tail.
Noodles are the best when they are not too soft or not too hard, and this hawker stall has nailed it.
The sauce is not too spicy but yet adds that extra kick into the noodles.
Be sure to add vinegar when you try it, you will not regret!

Souperstar
New generation Popiah with a Twist! You can eat it like salad. It really healthy and trendy now.
Fortune foods has been specialising in popiah skins and kueh pie tee since 2004.
From its humble beginnings as a small hawker stall focusing only on retail sales, the brand has since expanded to wholesale and home delivery.
Wei Ting and Wei Ling, the two sisters in their 20s, have spent a lot of their childhood helping out at their parents with this family business since young.
They have recently started out a new brand – Souperstar, to reach out the idea of “a living craft – popiah” to more people especially the younger generation whom may be missing out the great taste of traditional handmade popiah skin (a hard-to-find skill these days).
Using the traditional popiah skin which the sisters are familiar with, they jazzed it up at Souperstar to serve a few fusion popiahs and western soups, retailing at affordable prices.

KOK KEE WANTON NOODLES 国记云吞面
I have long heard of the notoriety of Kok Kee Wanton Noodles from the now-defunct Lavender Food Square that overcharges for its small portions however,
I have heard even more regarding its grumpy elderly owners who had offended quite a bit of customers (go snoop around the food forums and you'll see what I mean).
Yet, despite the less than favorable reputation, the stall still attract quite a queue daily.
Meanwhile, over at Jurong West Food Centre, there is a Wanton Noodles stall bearing the same name (also claiming to be from Bugis), charging the same higher-than-usual price,
and does not serve green pickled chili just like the one at Lavender.
There were rumors that the young couple running this stall were the nephew and niece of the older couple who had since retired.
I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this information but, I am still very excited to try a plate of this "legendary" Wanton Noodles that I have heard so much about.
The noodles they used are slightly thicker than the usual mee kia (thin noodles) which comes with a slight alkaline smell although it is barely noticeable.
The saving grace is that the noodles are delightfully springy and goes great with the excellent sauce doused over it.
It has this ketchup-ish flavor which reminds me of my favorite childhood Wanton Noodles that is sadly no longer around.
This is strange because I did not see any ketchup other than the chili and the clear sauce in my noodles right before tossing.
After trying it for myself, I can see why there are people who have a love-hate relationship with Kok Kee.
I have to admit that I do like the taste of Kok Kee Wanton Noodles but for that price with only two miserable wantons, I would say there are better options out there at a much friendlier price.

TANGLIN HALT DELICIOUS DUCK NOODLE 东陵福美味鸭面
Tanglin Halt Delicious Duck Noodle two units down is another one of the stalls here that open for business during the wee hours at Tanglin Halt Market.
By "wee hours", I really meant 5.30am! One can only wonder how early our hawkers have to be at their stall to prepare everything just so we could have breakfast the moment we opened our eyes.
Their dedication to their craft is what makes them truly deserving of our respect!
The noodle's sauce is made up of chili sauce and the duck's braising sauce.
The spiciness and fragrance of the chili together with the savoriness from the braising sauce makes a nice combi for tossing the noodles in.
The duck meat is deboned and sliced thinly. While I find the duck meat rather bland, the texture is tenderly moist. It actually taste quite delicious if you dip it in the noodle's sauce.
This is the bowl of soup served separately with my dry noodle. The herbal taste is quite subtle though the hint of star anise is quite distinct.
Of course, I would not mind if the herbal taste is slightly heavier.
On the whole, the soup is easy on the palate without being overwhelming.
While waiting for my turn in the queue, I have seen customers bringing their empty bowl back for refills.

58 Minced Meat Mee
58 Minced Meat mee is a popular Minced Meat Noodle With Fresh Handmade Dumplings Is The Best Kept Secret In Bedok.
I lift my head high to confidently proclaim that 58 Minced Meat Mee at The Marketplace@58 in Bedok serves the best minced meat noodle soup.
Loyal customers have always kept this stall under wraps to avoid longer queues – the average queue already entails at least a half-hour wait.
They serve the hearty minced meat bowls to your table, so don’t assume you’re in luck when you don’t see a physical queue.
The noodles are fairly chewy but not to the extent of the texture you get from instant noodles.
Don’t let them sit too long in the soup, they tend to get soggy quick!
Now for the king component: the dumplings. These gems are freshly churned out daily, made in the wee hours of the morning.
The dumplings are stuffed handsomely with a special minced pork marinade and other secret ingredients (I believe).
How i wish this place can also open for dinner and supper.
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Ah Lock & Co
Creative Local “Donburi” With Hakka Yong Tau Foo & Thunder Tea Rice, At Tanjong Pagar Centre
It is heartening to see young hawkers going places, especially when it is not easy work. And great to see some creativity in how our local food can be presented. (Really a ”FoodieMakeover”)
Ah Lock Tofu run by the young Lee Lock Teng, first started at Yishun Park Hawker Centre as part of Timbre’s incubator programme for first time F&B ‘hawkerpreneurs’.
The Yong Tau Foo recipe was from his grandmother, and he decided to marry the two types of food items into a rice bowl.
You can say this is “Hakka-style Donburi”.
There are vegetables of manicai (sweet leaf) and long beans which you would find in Thunder Tea Rice incorporated, then drizzled over with savoury sauce.
A part of me wished there was a noodle or even just soup option, and another for more meat somehow for a more substantial meal.
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Shi Wei Da
Sloppy nutty, utterly delicious satay bee hoon is this hawker’s winning dish.
Satay bee hoon will not be long in Singapore because not many stalls left. This is one of the stall still operating.
Sumptuous Satay Bee Hoon at Bedok 85 Fengshan Market, With Michelin Bib Gourmand
For the last 20 years, Ng has been cooking and perfecting the recipe for just one dish: satay bee hoon.
This quintessentially local dish is said to be created by Teochew immigrants who married typically Chinese ingredients
like pork liver, cuttlefish and rice vermicelli with the peanut gravy that accompanies Malaysian satay.
The sauce is sweet, savoury and spicy all at once, clinging on to smooth vermicelli and coating creamy slivers of pork liver as well as being absorbed deep into spongy slices of fried tau pok.
It was this dish that caught the Michelin inspectors’ fancy and landed Shi Wei Da a spot in the Bib Gourmand selection of the MICHELIN Guide Singapore 2018.
Cuttlefish is the one ingredient that is conspicuously absent in his rendition of satay bee hoon.
He’s chosen to omit the relatively expensive seafood ingredient in order to keep his prices low.
“I don’t think my food is very good. It’s okay.

Janggut Laksa
The Original Katong Laksa) tha is Only Available At The New Upper Paya Lebar Road Outlet.
With a history dating all the way back to the 1940s, Janggut Laksa has relocated and expanded over the years, with the third store finally open at Upper Paya Lebar Road.
Continue reading, because this newest store has something the other two do not — in addition to the signature original laksa, the new store also offers crayfish laksa
The Janggut Laksa is certainly different from other laksas that I’ve been eating — the biggest change is the gravy. Instead of the usual thick gravy, the one served here is more of a soup; light and very easy to drink.
To my amazement, the gravy was not spicy at all, with the chilli served on the side to save poor souls like me who can’t handle high levels of spice. Mix it in if you like your laksa spicy!
The noodles were springy and the ingredients were all available in generous portions, with crunchy beansprouts and fresh prawns.
Having now tried the authentic Katong laksa, I don’t think I’ll be able to settle for most laksas elsewhere. As with all the other Katong Laksa stalls out there, I was particularly fond of the fact that the noodles are cut short so that I can eat them with a spoon, that just means less stains on my shirt.
If you’ve been craving for Katong laksa but haven’t had the time to go down to the other outlets, head to the newest outlet for your fix!

Walaku
‘Grilled’ Nasi Lemak with a Luxurious Twist!
Nasi lemak is a hearty local dish that is adored by Singaporeans.
It has the perfect combination of flavours and textures — fluffy and fragrant coconut rice, sweet and spicy sambal as well as crunchy ikan belts.
What’s not to love? Sure, we’ve all had various renditions of this dish, whether it be with beef rendang or a juicy fried chicken wing.
But have you had a nasi lemak with lobster at Walaku before?
Walaku is a Halal eatery that serves up traditional local dishes with a modern twist.
They have opened three outlets so far, including two hawker stalls at Yishun and Bedok.
We decided to pay their latest outlet, a brand new bistro at Joo Chiat Road, a visit.
Walaku’s nasi lemak is exceptionally unique.
They grill their coconut rice, which is tightly wrapped in a banana leaf.
I’ll definitely visit Walaku again to try their other innovative dishes!

Ye Lai Xiang Tasty Barbecue
Amazing Hainanese-style Western Food. One of the early hawker stalls to sell Hainanese-style western food in a hawker centre in the 1970s, you’ll be thoroughly satisfied with the food at Ye Lai Xiang Tasty Barbecue, but only if you manage your expectations.
Ye Lai Xiang Tasty Barbecue is one of the many places on my to-visit list.
It was located at Margeret Drive Food Centre before it relocated to Maxwell Food Centre 6 years ago.
Mr Leong, who mans the stall with his wife, carries on the legacy of his father, who first started this food business in 1971.
Ye Lai Xiang Tasty Barbecue serves up delectable Hainanese Western food that you should definitely try.

Thai Fusion Wanton Mee
Young Hawker’s Delightful Twist on Tradition!
As a 21-year-old, the weight and responsibilities of adulthood are slowly creeping up on me.
But, while I’m still hopelessly clueless as to what I want to do with my life, next-gen hawker, Yeo Tian Haw, has got it all figured out!
Tian Haw opened up Thai Fusion Wanton Mee with his childhood friend, Zi Jian, just four months ago.
Not only is this Tian Haw’s first venture in the F&B industry, he’s also just 21 years old!
The pair took on different part-time jobs before a trip to Thailand changed their lives forever.
After falling in love with a bowl of Thai wanton mee, they decided to develop their own version!
Overall, this was still a refreshing twist, and I didn’t find myself missing char siew! I’ve no complaints about the fried wantons which contain a pork mixture that is marinated with soy sauce, oyster sauce and pepper.
These golden-brown delights were wonderfully crispy and very well-seasoned!
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Chan Kwong Kee (S’pore) Roast Shop
Brilliant Roast Meats! Loyang isn’t the most accessible place in Singapore.
Located in the far, far east of the island, there isn’t a designated MRT station near the vicinity, the nearest being Pasir Ris.
When someone mentions Loyang, there’s only one place that comes to my mind — the huge white and gold Loyang Tua Pek Kong temple that many devotees go to pray.
Other than that, the estate is home to many industrial buildings and factories.
Now, I’ll also think of something else whenever anyone asks me what’s there to do in Loyang.
Located within the 64+4 Food Court that is just opposite the temple, Chan Kwong Kee (S’pore) Roast Shop, which, as the shop name suggests, sells a variety of roast meats.
Chan Kwong Kee (S’pore) Roast Shop isn’t a ‘kept secret’. During lunchtime on weekdays, throngs of diners queue up patiently, waiting for their turn to sink their teeth into gorgeous roast meats.
Each order of meat — roast duck, soya sauce chicken, char siew or crispy pork belly — comes with a generous side of very simple and lightly seasoned stewed cabbage which goes very well with the flavorful meat.
Most of the patrons are workers working nearby, and the stall isn’t widely visited by the general public but if you do love yourself a good plate of roast meat and rice, you might want to pay the stall a visit.

Nam Seng Noodles
Superb Venison Hor Fun by an 88 year old Aunty.
88 year old Madam Leong Yuet Meng has been whipping up plates of scrumptious venison hor fun and wanton mee for more than half a century.
She started as a canteen vendor at a school, before she set up her stall at the former Stamford Road National Library.
For the past 20 odd years, she has been serving many white-collared workers in the CBD.
The egg noodles are cooked to a very springy texture and have a good bite.
Char siew here is the old-school kind, mostly lean meat, with a tinge of sweet tasting marinade.
Remember to add some green chilli for that tanginess.
Each plate of noodles is accompanied by a bowl of wanton soup, and the wantons are generously stuffed with meat.
We heard the queue during lunch hour can be crazy, so it’s best to arrive earlier. Nam Seng also offers soy sauce chicken noodle, seafood hor fun, and another hot favourite, fried rice.
