House Of Happiness

?itok=aH7tEzRF&timestamp=1544149437

I may have discovered one of my favourite new places to eat in Bedok.

House Of Happiness made me happy for an hour as I wolfed down bowls and bowls of rice.

It was a carb nightmare for some, but such a joy for me.

The claypot rice restaurant has discovered a way around what it perceives as a downer - the long waiting time for the dish to be cooked - and employed a parboiling technique to hasten the process.

The people behind House Of Happiness are also the ones responsible for the popular stall Mr Lorbak in Ubi, so naturally they brought some of their signature dishes over.

The Signature Lorbak ($9) is a must-have because there are few things more delicious than pork braised overnight in a stock of herbs and spices.

The meat is so tender, with the flavours locked into the skin.

Way less successful is the Luncheon Fries ($4). I was baffled why it was recommended, because there is nothing inventive, interesting or exciting about it.

I could have done this at home with my air fryer.

But still, I finished it because one simply does not waste luncheon meat.

Bugis Street Chuen Chuen Chicken Rice (Bugis)

Bugis Street Chuen Chuen Chicken Rice is a restaurant that offers a delightful dining experience with their menu featuring Chinese cuisine.

Prepared using only the freshest and most delicious ingredients, every dish in the menu is bound to satisfy your taste buds.

Located at Heritage Place and just a few minutes away from Bugis MRT Station.

Bugis Street Chuen Chuen Chicken Rice is an ideal choice for simple get together with family and entertaining friends while indulging delectable Chinese dishes in a casual and relaxed atmosphere.

The roasted chicken was cooked for a bit too long as it was tough, but it held a smoky flavour like most roasted chicken.

The rice, on the other hand, had a very strong ginger taste to it.

Despite not having the traditional chicken rice aroma, I enjoyed it after a few mouthfuls as the gingery flavour grew on me

Ah Hui Big Prawn Noodle

This stall is located at Balestier Market. One and only stall with no franchise.

The well-known “Ah Hui Big Prawn Noodle” from Longhouse along Upper Thomson has moved to Balestier Market (beside Boon Tong Kee).

I decided to pay a visit during lunch last week. Ah Hui has definitely expanded.

Customers can choose to have their noodles in the soup or opt for a dry version.

They use Angka prawns where the meat are firm to the bite and their freshness comes through.

The prawns are blanched in this soup when orders are placed, giving it the subtle taste of the crustaceans.

The mildly spicy soup is made from scratch every morning with prawn heads and shells. It is very garlic loaded, some of us thought it could be more prawny and robust.

Having said that, it is still very satisfying. Plus, I don’t have to queue for an hour like other popular prawn mee stalls. The noodles is tossed with aromatic chilli sauce.

The shiok factor is the generous sprinkling of crispy lard cubes and fried shallots.

Go early to avoid disappointment.

Albert Western Food

Western-Asian fusion food is pretty popular in Singapore and Albert Western Food is one of the stalls offering these fusion dishes.

Traditional curries are usually paired with plain rice or bread hence, it was different to see it paired with spaghetti.

I had to try it, so I ordered their Curry Chicken With Spaghetti (S$8).

The dish reminded me of the thick and rich gravy from Toast Box.

I enjoyed this dish a lot as the potato chunks are first fried until lightly crispy on the outside, then boiled in the curry to soak up the gravy.

This is one of the most popular stalls which brings in constant long queues.

Pu Tian Shou Gong Mian 莆田手工面

I’ve often heard friends rave about the bee hoon from chain restaurant Putien, but the dishes are a little pricey.

Imagine my delight when I found a cheaper alternative that serves up traditional dishes from the region of Putian, Fujian in China.

We found Pu Tian Shou Gong Mian nestled in a corner of Balestier Food Centre, and they offer mains and zi char-style dishes.

Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck

New Entrant in Michelin Bib Gourmand 2018!

Chuann Kee Boneless Braised Duck has no shortage of customers.

I dropped by Ghim Moh Market & Food Centre on a weekday afternoon and there were still customers patronising the stall even though it was pretty late.

Chuan Kee’s popularity clearly didn’t go unnoticed – the stall was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand for the very first time in 2018!

The stall might have just received this award, but they’re definitely not the new kid on the block.

I struck up a conversation with the man who was serving me and he told that the stall has been open for more than 10 years!

However, as I pried deeper and asked about the recipes for their dishes, he showed signs of reluctance.

It would seem that Chuan Kee’s recipe is a well-kept secret! Chuan Kee’s menu is simple enough.

Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck’s steady stream of patrons is a testament to its popularity.

Don’t go there expecting to gain an insight into their recipes though!

Took Lae Dee

Cheap and Good Thai Food in Tai Seng!Looking for quick and affordable Thai food in Singapore?

Took Lae Dee is the place to go! Their Thai name, ‘Took Lae Dee’, literally translates to ‘Cheap and Good’.

Originally a famous 24/7 restaurant chain in Bangkok, the brand is launching its first overseas branch here in Singapore on 18 May.

Sadly, we will not be getting the same 24-hour operating service here in Singapore. Located just opposite Tai Seng MRT, Took Lae Dee’s approach is simple – to serve authentic restaurant-quality Thai food at low prices

The pad Krapow , which is one of Took Lae Dee’s main dishes, comes in at just $3.80!

It features a choice of minced chicken or pork, stir-fried with plenty of Thai holy basil leaves.

It’s worth noting that Took Lae Dee cooks everything to order – their food comes straight off the wok and comes to you piping hot, the way Thai food should be eaten.

The Pad Kaprow comes with a serving of white rice topped with a crispy fried egg, which still had a soft runny yolk in the centre.

Though the strong aroma of the holy basil might not appeal to some palates, I found that it did not overpower the flavour of the minced meat and actually complemented it quite nicely. The minced meat was rather salty but this gets balanced out when it is eaten with the rice.

Regarded as one of Thailand’s national dishes, Pad Thai had to have a spot in Took Lae Dee’s menu.

The dish definitely looked the part. It comes with rice noodles stir-fried with eggs, tamarind pulp as well as fresh bean sprouts. Roasted peanuts are served on the side to add a nice nutty crunch to the dish.

Though the noodles were well-cooked and slightly springy, I did find that they were a bit too sweet for my liking. That being said, those with a sweet tooth might enjoy this rendition of Pad Thai.

A squeeze of lime could provide some acidity to cut through the sweetness.

Rong Xing Yong Tau Foo

Fresh Yong Tau Foo at Tanjong Pagar Food Centre.

Tanjong Pagar Food Centre is a famous trove for good food.

It’s especially packed during weekday lunchtime as people working in the CBD make their way here for a more affordable lunch.

We were in the area when we decided to drop by for the famous Rong Xing Yong Tau Foo.

You might have heard of this stall because of the family feud between 2 sisters.

Years ago, Rong Xing Yong Tau Foo split into 2 stalls, each manned by one sister.

Apparently, the sisters weren’t on talking terms and ultimately decided to be competitors in Tanjong Pagar Food Centre.

But we weren’t here for an update on the drama, we just wanted good YTF.

While in queue, I saw people buying only the ingredients(presumably for home cooking).

This is a testament to how awesome the ingredients are.

Prawn Village

A Gratifying Prawn Mee by a Nurse turned Hawker.

Prawn Village opened 3 months ago at Golden Mile Food Centre, also known as Army Market, Prawn Village is a surprising find!

Owner Anson was a nurse for 16 years before embarking on his hawker journey.

“My grandparents used to be kway chap hawkers but they refused to pass their skills down to me as they always believed that degree holders shouldn’t pursue hawking as a career.”

7 years ago, Anson was holidaying in Penang, and came across a stall that served superb Penang prawn noodles.

He casually asked if the Penang hawker was willing to impart the techniques of preparing prawn noodles to him.

To his amazement, they agreed. He went back to Penang a couple of times to master the skills of cooking prawn noodles, before he finally set up Prawn Village.

Similar to other prawn noodles stalls, you get to choose between having the soup version or dry version.

You can also select your desired type of noodles from yellow noodles, hor fun, bee hoon, and thick bee hoon.
