Teo Heng Teochew Porridge
Teo Heng Teochew Porridge is a favourite amongst Teochew Porridge fans and this venerable stall at the Hong Lim Food Centre
is always packed from the time they start selling at 7am till they run out of fish at around 1 to 2pm.
Ask a handful of people where to eat the best Teochew Porridge in Singapore and most of them will point you to this particular stall.
At the heart of the stall is a Teochew Ah Pek who has been dishing out hawker food for 60 years. Mr Liew started selling food at the age of 17 and can still be seen serving Teochew Muay at this stall. The old man still looked remarkably fit and still has a keen mind.
Perhaps mom was right after all and eating fish is good for your brains!
A good bowl of Teochew Porridge has got to have just the right proportion of water and rice.
The Teochew Muay connoiseur can tell you immediately if a particular Teochew Muay stall is worth eating at by just eyeing the bowl of porridge.
Firstly, what we want to see is the “Swa ga Hai” (Mountain and Sea) which basically means that the porridge is watery but not overly watered down.
Secondly, the rice must remain whole and unbroken. The best Teochew Muay places throw away the pot of porridge when the rice breaks.
If you love Teochew Porridge, this is one of those stalls that you just have to visit because you can’t really discuss Teochew Porridge if you have not eaten here. It’s too bad I got there after 1pm so the steamed fish have all sold out.
Many of my kakis tell me those are the die die must try dishes!

Yan Chuan Roasters
Peking Duck And Crispy Roast Pork At Lavender.
Most of my childhood memories around Peking duck were at high-SES restaurants perched atop fancy hotels.
I distinctly remember only eating the dish during special occasions, and longing for the next time I would get to taste that crispy parcel of ducky goodness again.
Collecting our meal as our queue number buzzed in the distance, I was amused. Instead of the typical crepe that comes with Peking duck, we were given steamed mantou as part of the set.
That, however, did not stop me from enjoying myself. I assembled my Peking duck mantou as I would have with a crepe.
Slices of cucumber lay under a thin slice of duck, finished with a blanket of glistening hoisin sauce.
Digging in, you’ll realise that the crispy skin juxtaposes dramatically against the pillowy meat. It creates a beautiful contrast of textures.
Notes of five spice powder and lingering charred bits become more apparent the more you chew, as the meat slowly ends off with a creamy, luxe finish.
In many ways, Yan Chuan Roasters’ contemporary Chinese interior lends it an austere and polished vibe.
Their wood grain furniture and lantern inspired light features could pass off as a fancy restaurant anytime.
Yet, it is the joyful conversations and cacophonous chatter in the kitchen that imbue a sense of warmth and familiarity.
I’m hard pressed to find another joint that serves good quality meat at such an affordable price.
That said, one caveat I have is this: their mantou rendition of Peking Duck just doesn’t feel like Peking Duck to me.
Maybe I’ll just have to bring my own crepe next time.
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Yaowarat Thai Kway Chap
Famous Thai Kway Chap Comes To Town!
Stanly, what started out as a fascination with Bangkok has now transformed into a full-fledged commitment to serving authentic Thai cuisine.
“I love going to Bangkok for the food, especially kway chap. With the help of my uncle, Jason, who owns Soi 19, I was able to realise my culinary dream of bringing back to Singapore a piece of Thailand,” shared the young entrepreneur.
The venture is inspired by Thai kway chap stalls such as Nai Ek Rolled Noodles in Chinatown, Bangkok.
Patrons can now enjoy a range of Thai dishes without hopping on the next flight out to the land of smiles.
The eatery uses only produce that is sourced from Hai Yai, Thailand. Even the tables and chairs are all imported from Thailand. I am rather impressed by the effort put into re-creating the atmosphere that you can find in Chinatown, Bangkok.
there are some hits and misses at this relatively new Thai eatery, I’m excited to see this place rise to fame once they have improved their recipes!

WANTON Seng’s Noodle Bar
Wanton Mee Made ‘Atas’ in Amoy Street.
Since 1968, Seng’s Wanton Noodles of Dunman Food Centre has been consistent in serving their famous Wanton Mee to many generations of loyal customers.
However, the famed noodle and its chilli almost came to an end when the owner decided to head into retirement.
That was when Benson Ng, the current chef and entrepreneur of WANTON Seng’s Noodle Bar, bought over the business and went into training under the original owner.
Pairing up with F&B group The Establishment, Benson and his fellow Chef Brandon Teo brought wanton mee into new light as they set up a noodle bar at Amoy Street.
Being curious and food-loving Singaporeans, we headed down to the noodle bar for lunch and no doubt, there was a crowd.
We just waited for around 15 minutes for our seats and the food was served quickly within minutes after order.
Forget about having kopi or teh to pair with your wanton mee. Treat yourself to a glass of cocktail or craft beers instead, a combination you can’t have in hawkers.

YES! NASI KUKUS
Yes! Nasi Kukus – Delicious & Mouth-watering Fried Chicken!
When I think of Malay food in Singapore, the first thing that comes to my mind is nasi lemak.
This humble dish of fragrant coconut rice, meat, and sambal chilli is so popular that there are so many variations to it now. Lobster, cheese, you name it, we’ve got it.
Yes! Nasi Kukus specialises in nasi kukus and nasi dagang, which is red rice steamed with coconut milk.
The owner and chef used to work in Mujur Catering which they claim is a renowned catering company in Kelantan.
It is truly laborious to cook rice in individual aluminium cups, but if that’s how it’s traditionally done, kudos to Yes! Nasi Kukus for keeping to tradition.

Jia Bin Klang Bak Kut Teh (嘉宾巴生肉骨茶)
Malaysian-Style Herbal Bak Kut Teh in Rangoon Road.
road seems to be a bak kut teh street. Recently, we discovered a new bak kut teh eatery just opposite Tie Fun Wan – Jia Bin Klang Bak Kut Teh (嘉宾巴生肉骨茶).
The main difference between Jia Bin and other bak kut teh eateries along the street is that they serve traditional Malaysian-style herbal bak kut teh.
Jia Bin Klang Bak Kut Teh originated from Seremban, Malaysia.
The family has brought the Klang-style bak kut teh to Singapore.
If my memory doesn’t fail me, the first time I tried dry bak kut teh was at Leong Kee when they were still at Beach Road.
Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh came later and both blew my mind with their dry bak kut teh that’s sprinkled with dried cuttlefish.

Issan Thai Food 泰国东北美食
Cheap & Good Pad Thai And Basil Rice At Tanjong Pagar, With Michelin Recommendation.
I generally find Tanjong Pagar Food Centre under-rated compared to other CBD food centres such as Maxwell Food Centre and Amoy Street Food Centre, and there are still some gems to be discovered.
Although modest in size, Tanjong Pagar Food Centre is a bustling weekday lunch venue.
It offers diners a great choice of inexpensive and aroy Thai food via the Issan Thai Food stall, located on the second level.
Heading there for an early dinner would mean less of a crowd, and you can have their Thai food at a much cooler environment.
The stall is also listed in Singapore’s Michelin Guide, considering not bad as there are only 2 other Thai establishments on the list – Yhingthai Palace (Bib Gourmand) and Long Chim (Michelin Plate).

Qiu Rong Ban Mian
A hidden gem that we stumbled upon in Old Airport Road Food Centre. Honest to Goodness Handmade Noodles.
Helmed by a couple who has been running the business for 20 years, this stall dishes out comforting, piping-hot bowls of hand-made noodles that can be enjoyed even in Singapore’s scorching weather.
Over the years, their fresh noodle offerings have gained them a loyal fan base and many regulars have even made it a point to travel all the way down just for their noodles even after they
relocated from Roxy Square to their current location.
Their noodles are freshly-made every single day.
In fact, the owner of the stall gets up at 5am every morning for the preparation of the noodles before opening the stall at 9.30am—the mark of a true and passionate hawker.
Die Die also must try.Don't miss it.

Dong Ji Fried Kway Teow
Came sua-gu (mountain tortoise, a term used to describe someone as ignorant), but the only Char Kway Teow stall I know in Old Airport Road is Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow.
However, I was never impressed so CKT was never in my list whenever I visit that hawker centre.
Until recently, when the foodies gathered for Roast Paradise, I was then introduced to Dong Ji Fried Kway Teow which is just opposite the stall.
The queue was more than 20 minutes during lunch time as the owner fries each plate of CKT individually.
No complaints at all man, Uncle Teng please take your time to fry! The owner does everything single-handedly, he takes the order and fries it.
With more than 40 years of experience in frying CKT, his movements in front of the hot wok says it all.
I see how he “dances” with his frying movement, adding fresh prawns and squid into the oil before the noodles.
I savour my first mouthful, I am impressed. The kway teow seems to come to live.
The fluffy noodles that were coated with spicy, eggy goodness, giving it a lovely taste and texture.
The dish also had enough wok hei, the right amount of char and a spice level that was perfect.
The cockles were plump and some crunchy beansprouts were scattered among the noodles.
Strips of garlic chives completed the dish. It’s not like the typical CKT which gives a super black and sweet finish.
Here, it is more savoury and good amount of smokiness, just the way I like it.
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Penguin’s Kitchen
Having moved from Jalan Berseh Food Centre to the heartlands of Hougang Central a couple of years ago, Thai Jing Jing had been missed (by us) for their stellar Deep-Fried Garlic Pork and other delectable Thai cuisines after its permanent closure.
It definitely came as a surprise to hear Thai Jing Jing’s comeback; a hiatus that took a little more than two years. Having collaborated with Nanyuan Noodle House and Penguin’s Grill under a single roof named Penguin’s Kitchen, Thai Jing Jing is now one of the three tenants that runs within the open-air establishment.
The decor may not be elaborate as other establishments, but it certainly is a far cry from the coffeeshop stall/hawker centre stall that is used to be in the past — the eatery seems to follow the theme of a hipster coffeeshop, though the only difference is how menus of the different establishments are being handed over when the patrons are seated.
Thai Jing Jing operates on a full-day basis, from opening to closing.
Rays of sun flooded into the restaurant retrofitted with a dark interior palette.
Though bright in the day, at night, it transforms into a dimly lit, romantic enclave.
And with a tasteful mix of Thai and American songs serenading through the speakers, the ambience could not have been more perfect.
With the sun slowly setting, and nearby expressway clogged with cars haphazardly inching towards home, I sunk deeper into my seat – soaking in the restaurant’s ambience.
I think we’ve just found another entry for our top 10 affordable Thai food places below $10.
I think this will be my new favourite spot for Thai food.

Sheng Ji Noodles 著名昇记肉脞面
The Definitive Bak Chor Mee with a rich history.
Current and former residents of Bukit Merah will find Mdm Keo and Mr Goh a familiar presence in the neighbourhood.
After all, they’re the folks behind Sheng Ji Noodles, and have been serving up the area’s best bak chor mee (minced meat noodles) for 37 years.
What most might not know is that this recipe is even older than that! For 50 years, Mr Goh’s father had made a living selling Teochew-style bak chor mee near the Singapore River.
When the elder retired, he passed down the recipe to Mr Goh and Mdm Keo.
The couple have dutifully kept the business thriving since, moving only once to their current location in Bukit Merah.
No Shortcuts and secret to Greatness. Teochew-style bak chor mee is a quintessential hawker favourite. Everything is fresh inside.
Nearly every hawker centre and kopitiam has a bak chor mee stall.
Yet, amidst a sea of similar options, folks who live and work in the area firmly stick to Sheng Ji Noodles for their bak chor mee fix.
Many have continuously patronised the stall for decades. Even those who have moved out the neighbourhood make a point to travel across the country regularly for these noodles.
One such long-time customer visits regularly from Tampines!
What is it that sets Sheng Ji’s bak chor mee apart from the rest? What’s the secret behind Mr Goh and Mdm Keo’s 87-year-old recipe?
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle Soup 松记粿条汤
Toa Payoh Lorong 5 food centre is somehow a night market with few stalls in operation during the morning or lunch hours.
Song Kee Kway Teow Noodle soup is one of the very few that started early for the business.
We have heard about the stall for its famous Kway Teow soup and finally we got the opportunity to validate the statement.
We ordered the Kway Teow soup and the mee pok dried with chili.
Fishball Noodle open till Midnight.
This was the real star of the stall, you can feel the sweetness and fragrance of the soup in the bowl, the clear and well seasoned soup with the kway teow was a thumbs up.
At least the trip here was not a waste with some satisfaction of this tastefully prepared Kway Teow soup.

Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle
Delicious Fish Maw Soup in Serangoon Gardens.
Nothing is more welcoming that a rich bowl of fishmaw soup filled with generous servings of minced pork, pork liver and quality fish maw, topped with braised mushroom slices.
Seng Kee has been in business for 36 years. Owner Mr Lee started out in Eunos before settling here in Serangoon Gardens a few years ago.
He is well known for tossing his bowl up into the air when he is cooking his Bak Chor Mee.
I have been a loyal fan of Seng Kee for many years.

Joo Chiat Prawn Mee
The Secret is Out, the Master of Hei Mee is Back!
Not sure if you remember Joo Chiat Prawn Mee which used to sit at the junction of Crane Road & Carpmael Road.
It shut its doors sometime ago but has recently re-opened at Ayer Rajar Food Centre!
Mdm Lee Xiu Chun’s father came to Singapore from Xiamen and started to cook prawn noodles to make a living.
They are relatives with the owners of Blanco Court, Jalan Sultan and Beach Road Prawn Noodles.
Plus, they also taught Ruifang’s late grandfather who started 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles how to cook hei mee too! Mdm Lee closed her shop previously to take care of her husband.
Now, she has re-opened Joo Chiat Prawn Mee with her son-in-law.
I prefer the dry version when it comes to prawn noodles, but I love the soup prawn noodles here more.
Joo Chiat Prawn Noodles’ murky soup was hearty and comforting.
It boasted a good balance of savoury flavours and sweetness from the prawns and pork bones.
Chilli powder is provided, but we think the broth is flavourful enough on its own.
