Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Mee

The Best Hokkien Mee At Chomp Chomp Food Centre, With Michelin Plate.
Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Mee 亚福炒福建虾面 is considered the champ among many regulars in Serangoon.
Hokkien Mee is one of those local hawker food that I treasure more: Because these stalls are typically ?one-man-shows? cooked by old hawkers, many of them do not have an apprentice to hand over their skills and business to.
The stall is also listed in the ?Michelin Plate? guide. (The Michelin Plate or L?Assiette Michelin is a new designation worldwide, a symbol that indicates ?restaurants where the inspectors have discovered quality food.?)
There is always a long queue here, so be prepared for the long wait of at least 30 ? 45 minutes while uncle whips up your order.
On peak hour weekends, it can go up to an hour or more. (In that kind of heat, people around may get slightly short-tempered, so stay patient.)
Surprisingly (fans don?t come and scold me ah), I thought there could have been more wok-hei and so it lacked of that ?wow? factor?. Perhaps it has to be with the hour I went ? gone down quite late to avoid a long queue.
Overall, a well-balanced plate in terms of flavours and ?stickiness?.
Long-time diners here rate Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Noodles as the best among all the Hokkien Mee stalls, though taste is always subjective.

Must-Try S$4 Char Kway Teow Drenched In Garlic & Egg Sauce At Marine Parade Food Centre.
Despite how it looked, the smell of the char kway teow won me over instantly. It was smoky and pungent, with an intense sharpness from the garlic and pepper, and I couldn?t wait to dig in.
I love it that Apollo Fresh Cockle Fried Kway Teow?s style of cooking is different from other char kway teow places. It?s not only unique, but downright delicious.
Of course, it all boils down to preference. Some might not like its strong garlicky and peppery flavours while others might enjoy that intense smokiness, but for the record, I wiped my entire plate clean.

Kun Ji Duck Rice
Duck rice and duck porridge have always been my go-to for comfort food since it?s both affordable and scrumptious.
If you stay somewhere in the East, I am sure you will have heard about Kun Ji Duck Rice at Marine Parade Central Market & Food Centre. There are long queues during peak hours every day!
In hopes of adding another gem to my duck rice/porridge list, I traveled all the way from the West to the East to get a taste of Kun Ji Duck Rice.
Kun Ji gave a pretty generous portion of rice, and the dish also had plenty of duck meat drizzled with braised sauce all over. There was a good mixture of thicker and thinner slices of duck meat, all with skin, and each piece was tender and flavourful with a good amount of fat.
Overall, I found this to be an affordable and satisfying plate of duck rice. If I?m ever back in the Marine Parade area, I?d like to go back for a second plate.
My trip to the East was not in vain, and I liked that the dishes were generous in portion, tasty yet affordable. I would definitely add Kun Ji Duck Rice to my list of go-to duck rice/porridge places.
Craving some comfort food that doesn?t cost much? Head down to Kun Ji Duck Rice if you?re in the East!

Choon Kee Roasted Delights
Roast Meats to Sink your Teeth Into!
Roasted meat stalls are a dime a dozen in hawker centres. However, searching for a truly outstanding one is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Imagine my joy when I discovered Choon Kee Roasted Delights in Golden Mile Food Center, which serves impeccable roasted meat dishes!
Originating from Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2, Choon Kee Roasted Delights serves up all the roast meat classics.
This includes Roasted Pork, Char Siu, and Roasted Duck meat. Of course, I had to try everything.
What stood out to me most was the duck skin, which was actually crispy! Many roast meat stalls struggle to attain crispy duck skin, but Choon Kee has really mastered the art of roasting their duck.
If you are like me and can’t resist great roast meats, then Choon Kee Roasted Delights at Golden Mile Food Center should definitely be on your list of places to visit. You won’t regret it!

Wonton Mama
24-Hour Coffeeshop Stall Serves Thai Wanton Noodle.
Before I moved to SengKang five years ago, I always have this perception that there is not much to eat in this new town. But now, Sengkang is getting more exciting as more people move here. This also means there are more food options in the area!
Wonton Mama is the latest addition to SengKang. I first tried their food when I ordered online during Phase 2 (Heightened Alert). Impressed by the quality, I paid them a visit immediately after dine-in is allowed.
To be honest, this wanton mee is much better than those from some of the popular stalls I have been to. I would definitely come back again. Good news for night owls! They operate 24 hours on some days.

New Generation Fried Hokkien Me
Even with a name like New Generation Fried Hokkien Mee, the menu here is a classic hawker favourite. Woks and pans are used to create oily treats perfect for days when you feel like indulging.
Their version runs a little dry, which means that the noodles had ample time to soak up the stock. Slices of squid and pork belly could also be found. Topped with crispy pork lard, the result is a decadent dish of gooey comfort food.
The waiting time at most hokkien mee stalls is something of a question mark ? the lag time between each batch of cooking can take quite a while.
But here at New Generation, they provide buzzers for your order, which means you get to wait leisurely at your seat without having to stand in front of the stall. You May Also Like
And with a dish as rich like this, it could get overwhelming easily. Which was why we appreciated the pungent belachan served at the side, with its bright fire power cutting through the grease.
Complement the dish with a squeeze of some lime juice and the result is a winning combination you can easily get addicted to.

JOFA MEE POK
Ah, bak chor mee. Call me basic, but it?s been my number one go-to comfort meal since primary school, and probably will remain incumbent in my books way into adulthood.
Nothing sounds better than a steaming bowl of springy mee pok drenched in an aromatic combination of chilli and vinegar (oh, and more of both please), which is why every time there?s a new bak chor mee stall in town, I?m already making plans to visit.
The next on my list is JOFA Mee Pok, a newly opened store in Tampines.
JOFA Mee Pok is run by two young entrepreneurs, Joel Tan and Fabian Lim. The former of the duo graduated with a degree from the Culinary Institute of America, and brings with him experience from his apprenticeship at two Michelin-starred Restaurant Z?n.
JOFA Mee Pok also makes it a point to serve quality soup to their patrons, an upgrade from the usual salty, plain broth that most stalls offer as a side to their bak chor mee.
The soup is a rich broth made with pork bones, chicken, red dates, and fried garlic, and is made extra flavourful and tasty because the duo cooks seafood in it. It might be hawker food, but I think I?m pretty convinced that it?ll be worth making the trip down to Tampines

Feng Xiang Bak Kut Teh
After opening their first outlet in Kallang Bahru in May 2021, they?ve already opened a second outlet at the top level of Beauty World Centre, which has also seen a surge of popularity recently.
Our bak kut teh broth is brewed with quality herbs and ingredients, lovingly stewed for hours to give that authentic flavour that has been handed down through generations.
Tender meat infused with traditional spices will invoke memories of the taste from the home of herbal bak kut teh, Klang.
Introducing another local favourite ? fried porridge. Our porridge is simmered in a special broth before it is fried in a wok to give you that ?wok hei? flavour.
The complementing pieces of lard will create a delightful surprise to your taste buds. Here in Feng Xiang, we offer eight different fried porridge options. Don?t forget to ask for our special chilli to go with it!
If you?re in the vicinity and looking for something unique, definitely check out Feng Xiang Bak Kut Teh, even if it?s just a one-time affair for novelty?s sake.

Tiong Bahru Yi Sheng Fried Hokkien Mee
https://danielfooddiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/tionbahruyisheng7.jp g" alt="" border="0" />
Prawn Noodles With Michelin Bib Gourmand & Long Queue, At ABC Food Centre.
Don?t be mistaken. Tiong Bahru Yi Sheng Fried Hokkien Mee is located at ABC Brickworks Food Centre at Jalan Bukit Merah (and not Tiong Bahru), and is easily considered one of the best Hokkien Mee you can find in Singapore.
The queue waiting for a plate of wok-fried prawn noodles ($4, $5, $6) is very long, easily close to an hour during peak hours. I usually head over during late hours, so the wait is still manageable.
After it was listed in the Singapore Michelin Bib Gourmand , the line has gotten much much longer. (The other Bib Gourmand listed Hokkien Mee is Hong Heng Fried Sotong Prawn Mee at Tiong Bahru Food Centre.)
This stall has been around for close to 40 years, and is run by the second generation hawker Mr Toh Seng Wang. His father used to sell the noodles on a pushcart, and moved to this food centre in the 80s.
Uncle Toh is already nearing 70, often wearing goggles cooking up a storm behind his large wok.
Before I go on writing about it, I need to talk about ?auntie? who is there taking orders and collecting cash.
Don?t step on her toes. Don?t get on her bad books. Don?t make changes after you order. Tell her what you want clear and concisely.
Tip: Once you make your orders, you sit around to wait like the other customers as the noodles are fried in batches. REMEMBER who is in front of you. There was once my order was skipped? and guess who got scolded? me.
I try not to take photos of Uncle Toh frying anymore, because kenna ?scolded? again, ?Are you here to eat or take photos?? Okay, okay, sorry, sorry.
She was probably having a bad day. Be nice to her.

Moo Station
Phuket-Style Dry Rice Porridge Found on Crawford Lane (First of Its Kind in Singapore!)
As someone who?s never been to Phuket before, the idea of khao tom haeng (dry rice porridge) had me confused. Was it supposed to be a version of porridge that had its starchy broth drained?
My quest to educate my clueless self led me to Moo Station in Crawford Lane, a newly-opened stall that specialises in this Thai-style dish, helmed by husband-and-wife team Pilaiporn Boonchoo aka Sandy and David Ang.
Born in Southern Thailand, Sandy was a former freelance tour guide in Phuket who often took her guests to a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant that is famed for selling khao tom haeng. Inspired by this unique offering, she decided to bring a taste of it to Singapore and sought to recreate and refine her recipe after an arduous six weeks of experimentation.
No seasoning, no frills ? just plain ol? Fried Pork Skin. Switch things up with this crunchy side dish!
This is definitely something of a rarity and new in Singapore when it comes to authentic Thai cuisine. All those weeks that the owners dedicated to creating this khao tom haeng have 100% paid off. I suppose I can curb my desire to head to Phuket for a little while longer.

Eminent Thai Cuisine and Seafood
Eminent Thai Cuisine and Seafood is one of our new favourites because they serve excellent Thai food in the CBD. The name Eminent will be familiar to those in the Muay Thai scene because the owners (Spencer and Lai Hock) also own a Muay Thai gym called Eminent Air Muay Thai.
Lai Hock?s father, Ng Siu Beng runs the kitchen at Eminent Thai Cuisine and Seafood. He is no stranger to Thai cuisine because he was formerly a chef in Bangkok and stayed there for many years before returning to Singapore during covid-19.
We were so impressed after trying their food for the first time that we kept returning for more. The dishes gave us a homey feeling, as if your family member was cooking a comforting meal for you.
It is not your mainstream Thai food that you find all around but something that will hopefully make you go ?wow

Da Shi Jia 大食家大大大虾面
A New Next-Gen Prawn Mee Stall!
Located along Killiney Road, Da Shi Da is a quaint little restaurant that specialises in Prawn Mee. The restaurant opened early 2018, and is run by Seth Sim and his wife, Yvonne
You may find the Da Shi Jia brand quite familiar. In fact, the restaurant is part of the Big Eater Restaurant group, which is a famous zi char brand with many outlets island wide. The brand is owned by Seth?s father.
Seth shared with us that he learnt the art of cooking prawn noodles from a hawker in Boon Lay. He then decided to open his own restaurant specialising in prawn noodles. He will return to help his dad with the chain of zi char restaurants when his prawn noodles business takes off. His wife, Yvonne, also left her banking job to support her husband in his new business. As you enter the shop house, you will be greeted by a beautiful mural of the ?Eight Immortals Crossing The Sea?.
The mural exudes an oriental vibe, which gives the restaurant its finesse. This is, after all, a Chinese style restaurant that specialises in prawn noodles!
The menu spread at Da Shi Jia may not be extensive, but there?s definitely something for everyone.

Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle
A hidden gem still selling Claypot Bak Chor Mee with handmade ingredients.
During these hard times of dining restrictions and WFH crowds putting a dent in many hawkers? livelihoods, we?ve seen many kind souls publicise hawkers that need our support during this time.
The latest stall that has been getting a lot of traction on the popular Hawkers United 2020 facebook group is Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle, operated solo by an elderly lady.
Located at the popular CBD lunch hotspot of Maxwell Food Centre, Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle sells their signature Bak Chor Mee for a crazy low price of just S$2.50, a rare find in the normally pricey CBD area.
With the dwindling lunch crowds in the area, it?s a tumultuous uptake to stay afloat for many hawkers. And for places like Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodle who still insist on providing the best handmade love to their customers, they really deserve our support.
The stall is run by an elderly woman who manages it alone. When news of the stall came to light on the Hawkers United 2020 Facebook group, her daughter thanked netizens for praising the stall in the comments.
She also shared that her mother?s business suffered a lot due to the pandemic and the multiple restrictions, selling only 10 bowls a day.
Yet, instead of making meatballs and dumplings in bulk to freeze and save herself the time and cost, the elderly owner still insisted on hand-making all the ingredients that go into her noodles daily, from scratch.

Ri Tao Fu Teochew Pig?s Organ Soup
A faint sweet aroma from the broth instantly hit my nose as I walked towards to the stall, the uncle wasted no time in chopping up the offal to fill up my bowl with goodness.
To get to the food centre, you?ll have to climb up a flight of stairs from the bus stop. You can easily spot the Teochew Pig?s Organ Soup stall, which is nestled in the middle of the hawker centre.
The soup had a slightly darker shade of brown as compared to others that were clear, and it had a very light aftertaste. If you?re a fan of a stronger tasting broth, then you?d probably want to skip this stall.
The uncle was generous with the pig stomach and they were clean throughly, I enjoyed the collagen-filled pig?s skin, which had a very soft jelly-like texture that disintegrates quickly in the mouth.

Billion Bowls
Ex-Mikuni Chef Crafts Delicious Japanese Donburis in MacPherson.
When it comes to Japanese food, prices aren?t necessarily the most wallet-friendly. Luckily, you don?t have to spend billions at the newly opened Billion Bowls in MacPherson.
Billion Bowls is created by Yong Kang, an ex-Junior Sous Chef at Fairmont Singapore?s Mikuni. As the COVID-19 Pandemic dealt a heavy blow to the hospitality sector last year, Yong Kang left in search of new opportunities. He decided to channel his decade worth of experience into his own Japanese stall with his wife, Yuri, in April 2021.
The husband-wife duo works in sync. As Yong Kang efficiently works the kitchen with a blow torch in hand, Yuri smoothly prepares the ingredients while providing hospitable service to the customers at the counter.
So if you happen to be in the area, do check out this Japanese joint which offers wallet-friendly options within walking distance of Tai Seng MRT.
