Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh

Herbal and Pepper Bak Kut Teh 24 hours a day.

Even though the Teochew style peppery Bak Kut Teh is more popular in Singapore, the response from our Facebook Fanpage showed that there are a significant number of foodies who are looking for the Hokkien Herbal version.

So our kakis set off to look for one and ended up in Joo Chiat next to Tian Tian Chicken Rice. Not only does this restaurant serve the Hokkien version, they also serve the Teochew version, so you can have the best of both provinces.

One of the good things about eating at Sin Heng is that they can still serve you your pot of Kung Fu Tea. They are now using portable stoves instead of the gas cylinders for the kettles. So I can still order my tea, You Tiao and a claypot of boiling Bak Kut Teh! Ahhhh?.. another great breakfast idea.

Herbal or Pepper Bak Kut Teh? You can have both at Sin Heng, 24 hours a day. We had a great Bak Kut Teh meal here and if you are still not full, you can hop over to Tian Tian Chicken Rice 2 stalls down for some Chicken which was exactly what we did.

What?s more, they are opened 24 hours a day!

Very shiok!!!

Food is very nice and satisfying.

The food price is reasonable so order away!

TANG KAY KEE FISH HEAD BEE HOON

Traditional Zichar Stall Launches New Wok Hei Lunch Bowls!

Hong Lim Food Centre boasts a delectable selection of culinary treasures. Apart from the famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa, which was awarded a bib gourmand in 2017, you?ll also discover traditional hawker food stalls (Dong Fang Hong Sotong Ball Seafood Soup) alongside modern day hawker fare (such as Beng Who Cooks) all under one roof.

One of these hawkers stands out from the rest and it is none other than Tang Kay Kee- a zi char stall which marries the best of both traditional zi char and modern zi char lunch bowls into one stall!

Tang Kay Kee Fish Head Bee Hoon has been a household name amongst regulars of Hong Lim Food Centre. While the stall has been ?wok?ing? zi char fare for dinner goers since 1946, it has finally opened its doors to the lunch crowd with its newly launched modern-day wok?hei infused lunch bowls in January 2018! Fourth?generation hawkers, Debbie, 27; and Kamen, 21, are the brains behind this new concept. ?Before the stall shifted into Hong Lim Food Centre, my great grandfather was peddling along Upper Hokkien Street prior to the establishment of Hawker Centres.

Tang Kay Kee is actually derived from my great grand father?s name Tang Pak Kay,? Debbie revealed. ?We were initially known as Kay Kee 祺记, but added a ?Tang? in front of only after the renovation of Hong Lim in 2009 because we wanted to better commemorate this long tang heritage that is important to my grand Aunty, who is also the stall owner!?

A fresh spin is put on the classic hor fun. The Mixed ($5), which features hor fan stir?fried with garlic tender pork slices, fish slices, battered enoki mushrooms, and sous?vide egg, really won us over. ?We infused modern ingredients into our hor fun for the younger crowd. This is very different from our traditional hor fun served at dinner time, which comes with the usual liver slices and prawns,? shared the duo. We couldn?t agree more.

I was hooked on the battered enoki, which was made using 4 different flours and salt. The result was a uniquely salty and crispy mushroom which was extremely addictive! ?Also, we use a sous?vide machine to cook perfect eggs at 63 degrees? Kamen added.

There?s something for everyone here at Tang Kay Kee. With modern wok?hei dishes by day and traditional zi char fare by night, I?d say Tang Kay Kee deserves multiple return visits. I mean, where else in the hawker scene would you be able to find such an unusual yet classic take on tze char?

Hao Kee Seafood Deluxe

Burnt but Delicious Bee Hoon!

I was rather confused when I first heard of ?chao ta? (burnt) Bee Hoon. After all, why would someone want burnt food?

Zi char stalls are planted in every other corner of a hawker centre here in Singapore but finding one that is both affordable and scrumptious was an arduous task.

It predominantly encompassed an array of Chinese dishes. Yet, it is an undeniable truth that some stalls stand out brighter than the others. Hao Kee Seafood Deluxe is unquestionably one of those stars of the Toa Payoh district.

Nothing truly beats the sight of a jam-packed table of irresistible dishes because it?s the ultimate view to revel over the glorious meal.

Planning to have a hearty meal over jubilant conversations? Hao Kee Seafood Deluxe not only checks those off your wish list, they?ll make sure it gets saved as your future go-to zi char place.

Overall, there were more hits than misses. If you?re thinking of paying Hao Kee a visit.

SHI HUI YUAN

4-time Michelin Bib Gourmand Original Singapore Hor Fun opens flagship stall at Lau Pa Sat.

From a humble hawker stall in Mei Ling Market and Food Centre in 1969 to winning the Michelin Bib Gourmand award for 4 years straight (2016 ? 2019), SHI HUI YUAN has bravely weathered the passage of time while sending out delicious plates of Hor Fun.

SHI HUI YUAN has recently opened their new flagship stall at Lau Pa Sat Festival Market to bring the uniquely Singapore Hor Fun to the financial district.

I met the owners of SHI HUI YUAN, Mr Fong Pak Thim and his daughter, Lyne, at their new flagship stall in Lau Pa Sat to hear their story. ?Why did I become a hawker? For my livelihood.

I was working then but I heard someone applied for a hawker stall, so I went to apply too. I was lucky to get it, so we opened a stall at the Mei Ling Market & Food Centre in 1969,? said Mr Fong. Back in the old days, Hor Fun was an expensive dish served only in restaurants.

Mr Fong and his wife wanted to create their own version of Singapore Hor Fun that is affordable and nutritional, hence the name 實惠園.

To be very honest, I wasn?t sure what to expect because I always had the impression that it was another Ipoh-style Hor Fun that?s tossed with some soy sauce gravy. But I was wrong. This is nothing like Ipoh Hor Fun. I?ll consider this a uniquely Singaporean Hor Fun.

Mr Fong added, ?We didn?t call it Ipoh Hor Fun, because it is not. Hor Fun itself is tasteless. But when we cook it, we can?t treat it as just Hor Fun. We treat it as our children and ?groom? them. In order to be successful (tasty), it depends on what ingredients I add to ?groom? this plate of Hor Fun so that we are responsible to our customers.

? Passionately, Mr Fong?s wife developed a recipe using over 30 herbs which include Dang Shen, Yang Shen Xu and Luo Han Guo. The Hor Fun gravy is the embodiment of their Cantonese cooking philosophy of ?Food as Medicine?.

The herb-based braising sauce is continuously stewed with chicken and duck meat and bones for over 30 years. And each plate is packed with more than 1500mg of rice collagen. Wow!

If you are a fan of Hor Fun, this is the ONE place that you need to visit. Lyne hopes that more people can try this traditional dish, hence the opening of the flagship stall at Lau Pa Sat. ?Mei Ling Street is a mature estate.

We hope the younger generation can try this traditional taste that will continue for generations to come. At Lau Pa Sat, the office crowd and tourists can try our food without travelling to Mei Ling Street.? While the dishes left a deep impression, what was even more memorable was my conversation with Mr Fong. He is about my grandfather?s age.

Even though he doesn?t do much cooking nowadays, he speaks with so much pride about his food. A lot of times, it is about the stories behind the food that make the dining experience so memorable.

Mr Fong even sang a tune for me to explain the name of one of his dishes. Watch the video to find out more.

Fu Shun Jin Ji Shao La Mian Jia 福顺烧腊面家

In Maxwell Food Centre, this is one of the stalls with long queue even before its official opening hours at noon, and the go-to place when it comes to exceptional roasts.

Fu Shun Jin Ji Shao La Mian Jia 福顺烧腊面家 was established in 2008 by Singaporean Chan Tuck Kwai, who first began cooking in his teens.

His roast meats have become popular they attracted constant queues of diners. Waiting time can be 30 minutes at least during peak hours.

You are bound to find endless options of Cantonese roast stalls in Singapore. But then, not many can specialise in all three kind of roasts: roast duck, roast pork belly (siu yok), and barbecued pork (char siu) all at inexpensive pricing.

On its menu are Wanton Noodles, Dumpling Noodles, Mixed Meat Noodles, Duck Noodles, Roast Duck Rice and Roast Meat Rice.

The long line is not without reason, as most of the plates start from $3. And look at the portion given.

Some of Singapore?s best zi char places could very well be hidden in industrial estates and carparks.

Royal Thai Boat Noodles & Bar AUTHENTIC THAI CUISINE

Royal Thai first started out as a small food stall in 2006 along Bugis Street. In 2013, we opened our 1st restaurant at Fairways Drive, a hidden gem perfect for families and friends who want good thai food, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

In 2018, we opened our first Thai Boat Noodles bar at King Albert Park mall & another one in 2020 at Science Park One.

Our recipe for success is to use only the original ingredients from Thailand to maintain the authenticity, cooked by thai chefs with years of experience.

From having our own garden with thai herbs/spices, handmade finger food to in house sauces/condiments, we seek to continuously improve what we can offer to our customers.

We look forward to many more good years of serving quality thai food to all customers.

New Manlee Bak Kut Teh (新萬利肉骨茶)

Malaysian Style Bak Kut Teh.

Brought in by the same company that gave us Ajisen Ramen; the bak kut teh (BKT) brand co-existed physically with the ramen shop and even electronic order pad included dishes from both outlets which was a bit confusing.

Nevertheless, we had been waiting for so long for it to be opened and it would be a pity to leave without trying. Furthermore, New Manlee prides itself on their black, Malaysian style herbal BKT that's "slow boiled using 20 over carefully selected herbs and spices".

Finally done! I read a few negative comments on their facebook page with regards to their service and would like to add based on my experience.

Service was actually quite good the few ladies on duty were patient with my questions and i didn't even need to ask for them to refill the soup.

Director of Porridge (粥董)

Located in a super old-school coffee shop at Jalan Benaan Kapal is the Director of Porridge. They have a very punny name in Mandarin, 粥董 (zhou dong), which is a great way for people to remember them as it reminds one of Jay Chou?s nickname, 周董.

I asked the uncle if his surname was Zhou, but he said his surname was Wu. Oh man. It would have been perfect if his surname was Zhou! Uncle Wu and his son, who came up with the stall name started this stall just about a month ago.

It seems that the kopitiam that Director of Porridge sits in has many other stalls selling delicious breakfast food, so I would definitely be back for breakfast, or the century egg porridge from Director of Porridge, after a morning run someday!

It an enjoyable place for breakfast.

Nurul Delights

Nurul Delights is a family business that has expanded across Bukit Batok. With three outlets now, Nurul Delights is a hit with the residents.

Located in a nondescript coffee shop in Bukit Batok, Nurul Delights is a well-loved Muslim food stall by the locals in the neighbourhood.

With common staples such as nasi lemak, lontong and mee siam, Nurul Delights draws a faithful crowd of return customers with its affordable pricing and generous portions.

Every component of this dish was great, from the tender cabbage and crunchy radish to the soft lontong that went well with the light and fragrant coconut gravy.

However, what makes this dish truly special has to be the serunding ? the light orange chunks of spiced coconut flakes that lend a sweet-savouriness, different from the sambal.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed my meal at Nurul Delights. In fact, this is my family?s favourite place for breakfast during the weekends despite the queues.

All in all, Nurul Delights is definitely one of those places that you can get a hearty breakfast without burning a hole in your pocket.

After all, the food is cheap and good. What more can we ask for?

Famous Bukit Purmei Lor Mee

Shop reopens in Bugis ? Now Run By Uncle Teo?s Nephew!

Hands up if you are a die hard fan of Bukit Purmei Lor Mee. I visited their Bukit Purmei outlet in 2012 while I was still writing for the papers. That was one of the most memorable hawker features I did.

Uncle Teo started helping out his dad in Bukit Ho Swee from the 1950s when he was 8 years old. In the 1960s, the stall moved to Tiong Bahru before it moved again to a coffeeshop in Bukit Purmei.

Unfortunately, Uncle Teo suffered a heart attack in 2014 and closed the stall. He made a comeback in 2016 and opened in West Coast Drive. Sadly, he had another heart attack and closed the stall two years later.

When I heard that they have reopened in Bugis, I was very very excited. Run by Uncle Teo?s nephew Eddie, the new stall is located in a kopitiam near Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple.

We went at 10am on the second day of their opening and there was a snaking queue stemming from the stall. We waited for an hour to get our bowl of lor mee.

Queuing is expected because you know lah, die hard fans like us have been waiting for a long time!

Malaysia Local Delights

Rustic Malacca-Style Lok Lok Steamboat Buffet At Tanjong Katong.

If you often feel frustrated while waiting for your turn to use the communal ladle during every hot pot session, lok lok steamboat seem like a pretty good answer to solve your first world problem.

Just a stone?s throw away from the famous Punggol Nasi Lemak in Tanjong Katong, Malaysia Local Delights serves rustic Malacca-style lok lok steamboat buffet and many other familiar Malaysian dishes.

The interior of the restaurant has simple decorations with photographs of Malaysia?s skyline.

At the end of the day, we were quite bloated and couldn?t do more than one scoop of ice cream. We were happy to see that the selections available were better than other steamboat buffets I?ve been to.

However, we were not very impressed with the greasy deep fried snacks as my colleague found a strand of hair in her chicken wing.

I believe that there is definitely room for improvement with handling the cooked food.

As someone who lives near this neighbourhood, I feel like this is a reasonably priced place that I will be likely to return again with my friends.

This place is pretty much for you if you hate using utensils and enjoy being messy with your food.

Quan Ji

https://danielfooddiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/quanji13.jp g" alt="" border="0" />

When we talk about zi char in Singapore, the emphasis has usually been about variety of dishes, price, and wok-hei ? the ?breath of a wok? which imparts alluring heat to the food.

Quan Ji 權記 at Amoy Street Food Centre has been a favourite among the office workers in the Tanjong Pagar area.

Across the years, I found the stall to be consistent and fast.

Even during peak hour lunchtime, they are able to serve up my Beef Horfun in a relatively speedy manner.

But a tip for newcomers: you got to be ?brave? enough to head to the front and make your orders assertively, because auntie has a lot to handle and may just come across as ignoring you.

Quan Ji has been around since 1955, and currently operated by third-generation hawker Tony Liew at the Amoy Street Food Centre.

Chun Seng Noodle House

Bukit Merah: ?Pork belly with a taste of tradition & culture.?

Lately, I?ve been on a mee renaissance. All thanks to my 18-week pregnancy craving, I?m currently going through a food phase where all I can only think of for lunch and dinner are hawker-style noodle dishes. From wanton mee to mee rebus, name any mee-related dish and I would probably have eaten them at least once in the past two weeks.

My noodle frenzy led me to Chun Seng Noodle House, a recommendation by a dear friend who has been religiously visiting the stall for her bak chor mee fixes. Located within the food haven of ABC Brickworks Market, Chun Seng Noodle House is one, unlike its fellow counterparts.

My trip to ABC Brickworks Market might be an hour-long, but I left content, with a full belly and more importantly, a sense of satisfaction. Satisfied to have found yet another gem.

To me, this is the kind of taste that cannot be replicated easily and I?m fortunate to have tried it.
