Soon Heng Fish Ball Noodle
We Braved a Snaking Queue for a Good Bowl of Fishball Noodles.
After hearing about how this particular fishball noodle stall at West Coast Market sells out by 9 am or earlier, I was really hoping that I?ll make it before they are sold out. Operations start from 5 am, and you?ll be surprised to see a queue, even at that time. Heng ah, when I reached at 8:15 am, they are still open.
While finding the stall, I was told to find the one that has a lot of people queueing up at. However, I was confused as I saw no queue. Upon closer observation, I realised that the queue was actually snaking its way into the wet market area.
I was not expecting this but I joined the queue anyway. The journey to the stall front took about 20 minutes.
At the end of the meal, I thought to myself that perhaps the west side of Singapore is a wonderful place to be as well.
I would encourage all you westies to climb out of bed earlier to try this fishball noodles in soup! It?s really a next-level kind of fishball noodles.

Charcoal-Fire Fried Hokkien Mee At Geylang Lor 29
It is not that easy to find Hokkien Mee fried on charcoal fire anymore.
Located at an inconspicuous coffeeshop at Geylang Lor 29, there is always a moderately long queue here, with fans waiting patiently in the heat for a plate of delicious Hokking Mee.
Note: The owner Hock Siong has a brother (Alex) with a stall called Geylang Lor 29 Hokkien Mee located at East Coast. While they are from the same family, there are differences between the two versions.
Family differences aside, Hock Siong was trained by the guru, his father himself.
A plate now starts at $6, but most people go for the $8 or $10 options ? for a plate with that edgy, smoky taste due to the use of the charcoal.
I would say it terms of wok-hei, portion, flavours, texture, this is quite balanced overall ? difficult to fault.
It is also fried till soft and flavourful with lard fragrance.
Certainly one of the best versions you can get in Singapore.
One thing to note: There is no rice vermicelli used, just the semi-thick yellow noodles which gives it a slight sticky, sweet texture.
Some people may feel that there is a stronger alkaline taste therefore.

Shiok Shiok Noodles
Shiok Shiok Noodles resides in a business centre at Sin Ming Lane. The location is slightly out of the way, and only accessible by bus or car.
The coffee shop is spacious and breezy, with loads of vacant tables around, so finding seats won?t be an issue. However, do take note of the lunchtime crowd from the offices and industrial area nearby.
When it comes to young hawkers, I have nothing but utmost respect for them. Not only is the hawker life physically demanding, but it?s also an unconventional route to take.
Though not the best, Shiok Shiok Noodles does serve a decent bowl of noodles.
At the moment, Kelvin is still learning on the go, going around Singapore every weekend to taste the best bak chor mee and refine his own. I do believe that Kelvin?s bowls of noodles will only get better from here.
Shiok Shiok Noodles is not a halal-certified eatery.

JING JI FISHBALL NOODLE
Old-School Flavours With More Than 70 Years Of History.
Upper Thomson is a foodie haven ? there are lots of cafes, restaurants, and hawker stalls that are easily accessible and affordable.
Residents craving for good ol? hawker food usually flock to the quiet and unassuming Sembawang Hills Food Centre.
As you wander through the stalls, what catches your eye first is not the bright yellow sign of Jing Ji Fishball Noodle, but the line of hungry customers stemming from the stall front.
Boy, were the Teochew meatballs HUGE! Size aside, these beauties were juicy, wonderfully flavoured and absolutely filling. If I had known how tasty they were, I probably would have ordered an extra helping of them.
Between the two, I have to say my preference lies with the Teochew Meatball Noodle. That?s not to say that I wouldn?t recommend the regular Fishball Noodle. In fact, one bowl would definitely not be enough for me, so if you have an appetite, why not get one of each?

[B] Cai Ji Fishball Noodle
Underrated Stall in Toa Payoh.
Toa Payoh has its fair share of delicious eats and we’ve found another spot to add to the list. Heading over at 9:30am on a Tuesday morning, I was expecting the coffee shop to be relatively quiet but boy, was I wrong.
Every single table, but one, was occupied by aunties and uncles tucking into the very bowl of deliciousness that brought me all the way here.
While it didn’t have a snaking long queue, there was a constant and steady stream of people waiting to get their hands on this glorious bowl. Evidently, this stall was very popular with the local residents, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on my own.
There’s only one person manning the entire stall and I was amazed at how he managed to churn out bowl after bowl without stopping.
After about a 15-minute wait, we finally received our food. We went with both the soup and dry options, but opted for different noodles in each.
For the dry version, we ordered the standard mee pok (flat yellow noodles), and for the soup version, we got a combination of kway teow (flat rice noodles) and yellow noodles.
I was expecting a bowl with the standard fishballs and fishcake, and maybe some minced pork on top, but I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of ingredients.
While I would have preferred the noodles to be a tad spicier and more vinegar-y, this is definitely worth trying if you’re in the Toa Payoh area.

Robert Mee Siam
?Pale? but in the pink. It was not appealing at all when we looked at the presentation of the mee siam, not go by the traditional roseate or orangey gravy that we so used to but a plate of ?pale? looking light orange or almost whitish gravy, definitely the mee siam gravy was one of the lightest we came across, we were seriously in doubt if we have made the right choice, nothing in the plate can enliven our appetite.
Robert Mee Siam is economical, the standard topping of chives, hard-boiled egg and tau por, $2.50 with extra bee hoon for additional $0.50, we were wondered could it be the attractive price that lure the crowd for queuing up or the mee siam really have the substance to entice the people.
The very first sip of the gravy was surprisingly delightful, there was a present of sweetness, saltiness and sourness, well balanced in the taste and not overpowering from the spice or the sour tinge from the tamarind or assam, the taste instantly rekindled our memory about the old time mee siam stall around the corner of the coffeeshop, the nostalgia taste was vividly resonant through our mind and really excite our taste buds. The bee hoon has the right texture and was well saturated with the savory of the gravy, add on the chili paste and the kalamansi lime to have the extra tangy taste if you like to be more ?heavy? to the taste. We are equally impressed with the discernible layer of the oil and light touch given to the plate of the mee siam, a seemingly healthier but salivating dish that can satisfy many aspects of our expectation
We made our second round of ordering and again finished the plate of mee siam completely without leaving a trace of gravy behind, Robert Mee Siam may not tempting in the look, however, we have to admit we made a mistake this round judging the book by the cover, the ?pale? looking gravy not just worth the value but it does have the quality as well.
For this price, cannot find already

Ipoh Tuck Kee Son

Famous Ipoh Zi Char Eatery Known For Moonlight Horfun Opens In Singapore. Expect Very Long Wait.
Even though I went before opening time, I still had to wait for slightly more than an hour for my Moonlight Horfun.
Some people had it ?worse?.
Well, the famous Ipoh Tuck Kee Son 怡保德记仔炒粉 has opened in Singapore.
Restoran Tuck Kee 怡保德记 is considered one of the must-visits when you are in Ipoh, famous for its Cantonese style stir-fry noodles with power wok-hei.
This stall at Hoa Nam Building near Jalan Besar is opened by the 3rd gen, thus the ?son? in the name.
I actually attempted to queue for a number of times, but put away with the perpetually long-line and decided to turn up before opening hour of 5:30pm ? a ?strategy? which worked this time.
Even if you see just 8 to 10 pax in front (good news: we all maintain our social distancing on the markers), you may have to wait say about 35 to 45 minutes TO ORDER.
Will I queue an hour again for this? Perhaps no, this is easily one of the best Moonlight Hor Fun you can find in Singapore.

Wen Kang Ji
Wanton Mee With Mouthwatering Char Siew!
Despite being open for only about a week at the newly renovated Golden Mile Food Centre, Wen Kang Ji is already garnering lots of attention online. I?m confident that Wen Kang Ji will be the next wanton mee sensation because of their excellent char siew.
Like a treasure being buried deep within, you have to walk all the way, into the deep end of the hawker centre?s basement to locate them. The stall is opened by Desmond, his wife, and their buddy and business partner, Markus.
Even though the stall is new here, Desmond said that it has a history of about a year. The stall was at Albert Centre for a month in 2020, just before Circuit Breaker started. Although they tried their best to sustain the business, the grim outlook then forced them to call it quits.
Fast forward to a year later, they decided to step out with courage and restart their business here and we?re so glad they did!
If you?re still wondering who is Wen Kang because there was no mention of him, Wen Kang is actually Desmond?s one-year-old son! He shared with a proud fatherly smile that because the stall is named after Wen Kang, he?s the real boss.

Sik Bao Sin (Desmond?s Creation)
https://danielfooddiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/sikbaosin1.jp g" alt="" border="0" />
You would notice Sik Bao Sin (Desmond?s Creation) at Geylang is very different from other zhi char (cooked food) places.
Famed for having just one man behind the wok serving up home-cooked meals from the heart, Sik Bao Sin has a Singaporean as its cook (while many zhi char eateries are run by Malaysian chefs).
The restaurant name ?Sik Bao Sin? is Cantonese for ?eat your fill first? while ?Desmond? is Desmond Chia, the chef-owner.
There are only 13 items on the menu, dishes are either wok-fried or steamed. All menu items (except 1, find out below which one) are originally from Sik Wai Sin ? which should be a familiar one to zhi char lovers.
The younger of two sons, he hails from a family of cooks who migrated from China. His father, Chia Kok Hoong, moved to Singapore from Guandong, China in the 1960s, armed with nothing but a certificate issued by the Chinese government to recognise accomplished chefs.
Mr Chia Kok Hoong opened the restaurant Sik Wai Sin (?food comes first?) in 1968, becoming one of the first few eateries in that district.
Desmond practically grew up in the kitchen of Sik Wai Sin, playing while his father cooked and following him in the market. When their father retired, he and his brother Steve took over the kitchen. He manned and mastered the wok while his brother focused on in the steaming station.
Today, supported by his wife Joanna and his son, Desmond Chia continues his father?s tradition of being the only cook in the kitchen, with his own personal, home-cooked touch.
Yes, he is a one-man show and because of this, the wait is longer than usual. During peak hours, waiting time could reach 45 to 90 minutes.
Sik Bao Sin has also received the Bib Gourmand distinction from Michelin Guide.
Make a reservation for big groups (and you MUST be on time) or schedule an early dinner at Sik Bao Sin to secure yourself a seat.
If not, be prepared to queue, especially on weekend nights.

Modern Zi Char With Truffle Ee Fu Noodles And Charcoal Tofu, With Islandwide Delivery.
Named after its Head Chef Ah Foong, Chef Foong Restaurant is one of the zi char eateries in Singapore that fuses modern and traditional cuisines.
I was honestly not expecting restaurant quality food and presentation from a ?kopitiam-stall?, but was pleasantly surprised.
While he still uses traditional methods in cooking, he has added contemporary twists to make them more interesting and unique.

Hainanese Zi Char Eatery Known For Pig Trotters Bee Hoon And Gula Melaka Chiffon Cake, With Islandwide Delivery.
Operating since 1989 as a corner kopitiam at Tiong Bahru, Cheng?s 27 has modernised into a well-lit, clean and comfortable Hainanese eatery. Some may still remember it as Cheng?s Delicacies.
This family-run business spans 3 generations, originating from the grandparents? Chinatown home and moving to Tiong Bahru.
Unsurprisingly, even the logo is inspired by the family pet ? a cat that roamed in and out of the shop for food back in 1989.

Jiu Jiang Shao La 九江烧腊
Popular Roast Meat Stall With Daily Long Queue, At Ghim Moh Food Centre.
If you have eaten at Ghim Moh Food Centre before, you will know that Jiu Jiang Shao La (九江烧腊) is one of the most popular stalls here.
This roast meat stall sees a long snaking queue every day. When I went down recently on a Friday at 11am, there were about fifteen people ahead of me in the queue.
When I finally left the stall with my food after thirty minutes, I was amazed to see that the queue had grown to over twenty people!
The stall sells roast pork, roast duck, and char siew.
Prices are very affordable, starting from just $3 for a basic plate of roast meat rice.
There is no doubt that Jiu Jiang Shao La serves up delicious and affordable roast meats, and I can sort of understand why it sees crazy long queues every day.
I will try to go early next time to avoid the queue, though I will probably skip the stall if I have to queue for more than half an hour.

Michelin-Recommended Cantonese Roast And Chicken Rice Stall At People?s Park Food Centre
Conveniently located outside one of the entrances of Chinatown MRT Station, People?s Park Food Centre somehow has been better known for its large number of Sichuan stalls in recent years, especially for Ri Ri Hong Ma La.
There are many other notable hawker stalls there, including Yong Xiang Xing Yong Tau Fu, Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu (yes, there is a branch there), See Sean Rice Stall, Koo Kee Yong Tow Foo Mee, and Hong Peng La Mian Xiao Long Bao.
Another stand-out stall is Zhen Zhu Fang Roasted Delights 珍珠坊香港烧, which has been listed in the Michelin Guide with a Michelin Plate for a number of years.
Strangely, the Michelin Guide lists the stall as ?People?s Park Hainanese Chicken Rice?, but what it is really known for are its Cantonese roasts.

Fatty Cheong
Don?t Forget This Plate of Delicious Char Siew at ABC Brickworks
If you have been working and living in Bukit Merah, you will definitely know ABC Brickworks Food Centre. One of the must-haves at ABC Brickworks is Fatty Cheong?s (肥仔详) signature Char Siew Rice. This place serves one of the best char siew in Singapore.
The stall is famous for their Bu Jian Tian char siew which is a cut from the pig?s armpit area. The meat is perfectly roasted and extremely tender. Even the dollop of mildly spicy chilli sauce on the side is tasty.
Here we have a plate of charcoal-grilled char siew drenched in a thick black gooey gravy that is slightly sweet. Some may not like it, but it reminded me of my childhood when my grandfather would always get me a plate of rice drenched in all kinds of gravy.
The thick and meaty chunks carried a smoky aroma that can be tasted even through the amount of gravy that it was drenched in. The char siew has a good proportion of fat and lean meat, and the meat is just a tad chewy and packed with flavour.
